Fish Above Sea Level Selected by African Diaspora Film Festival

FISH ABOVE SEA LEVEL TO AFRICAN DIASPORA FILM FESTIVAL

The feature film Fish Above Sea Level by Jordanian-Palestinian filmmaker Hazim Bitar has been selected to the 19th edition of African Diaspora Film Festival to be held from November 25 to December 13, 2011 in New York, USA.

The film tells the story of an affluent urban professional from West Amman (Jordan) and a young village farmer who share a history and roots. Both find themselves unwilling participants in another cycle of history that pits the prosperity of one against the survival of another. The story of the film is based on a historical injustice, with strong racial overtones, endured by farmers of the southern Ghour region (south east of the Dead Sea).

"As we respond to the calls of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Ghassan Kanafani, we remind ourselves that the struggle for our humanity is globally interconnected," said Hazim Bitar. "We can't fight for justice for one oppressed people while looking the other way while others suffer."

The African Diaspora Film Festival's mission is to focus "the spotlight on innovative films that would otherwise be ignored by traditional venues, the Festival offers a unique platform for conveying African Diaspora artistic styles and craft in film."

Fish Above Sea Level will screen Saturday November 26 at 6:00 PM at Symphony Space/Thalia Theatre, 250 West 95th Street, New York, NY 10025 and Tuesday, November 29 at 8:30 PM at Columbia University –The Chapel, 525 West 120th Street, New York, NY 10027.

UPDATE REGARDING THE HOLLYWOOD BLACK FILM FESTIVAL

Fish Above Sea Level will screen Friday October 28, 9pm, at Laemmle's Sunset 5 Cinema, 8000 Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood, California 90046.
