We are proud to introduce to you the graduation projects of our latest Hope Films Basic Audiovisual Skills Workshop in the Gaza refugee camp in Jordan, completed on January 2nd, 2010.
The three short documentary films, made by 9 student filmmakers from the camp, touch on themes centered around coping with the harshness of life in the camp, outside the ancient city of Jarash, Jordan.
Residents of this camp were driven out of their homes in Palestine during the 1948 and 1967 Israeli-Arab wars and the resulting ethnic cleansing of non-Jews in the Holy Land.
This workshop marks the first anniversary of the 2009 Israeli attack on Gaza which left over 1400 Palestinians killed and destroyed over 30,000 homes leaving hundreds of thousands of Palestinians homeless, unable to rebuild their homes and lives because of the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Not one Israeli war criminal was brought to justice. Not one weapons supplier was held accountable.
Please note the films are not subtitled yet. We call on interested persons to help us subtitle these films using the YouTube subtitling feature.
1) DEGREES OF SUCCESS
Synopsis: Parents tell their children if they excel in school they will enjoy a comfortable life. But this "A" student from Gaza refugee camp discovers that being a stateless refugee means his high grades are worthless. And how does he react? He collects more degrees and attends every workshop and training he comes across. Stateless academic achievers in refugee camps end up working menial jobs or jobs for which they are greatly overqualified.
2) WILL WORK FOR FREE
Synopsis: The younger generations from the Gaza refugee camp in Jordan decide to take matters into their own hands. They volunteer to make their community a better place, even if it's a temporary one.
3) CYBER PARADISE
Synopsis: Children in the Gaza refugee camp have no place to play, but this video game cafe gives them a temporary escape to a virtual world far away from the reality of the refugee camp.
NOTE: This Hope Films workshop was conducted in partnership with the Community Development Office in the Jarash refugee camp under the umbrella of the UNRWA-Jordan.
